My family has been committed to our city for many generations. They have been involved in addressing affordable housing, education reform and the rebuilding of the city after Hurricane Katrina. My grandmother, in particular, who has been honored for civic engagement, inspires me to get involved with improving New Orleans. I think that education is crucial to the further improvement and sustainability of New Orleans because the next generation of citizens needs to understand the issues our city has and how to solve them. Soon enough, we will be the ones making decisions that influence our city. I am planning to go to college in a part of the country that isn't the south to give myself a broader perspective. I think that this program in particular will be very useful because I feel that most of my peers and I don't understand how the different aspects of the place we live function to the extent that we need to in order to positively affect the city. I want to be able to make a difference in New Orleans, and education is essential in my ability to do that.
