How does the study of a city's history affect decisions that move a city towards a sustainable future?
Understanding the past is key to understanding the present and how to move forward in the future. Gaining a comprehensive knowledge of our city's history helps us see clearly how we have gotten to where we are now and how to move forward in the future. Understanding what has or hasn't worked before leads to inspiration for how to create a brighter future.
My family has been committed to our city for many generations. They have been involved in addressing affordable housing, education reform and the rebuilding of the city after Hurricane Katrina. My grandmother, in particular, who has been honored for civic engagement, inspires me to get involved with improving New Orleans. I think that education is crucial to the further improvement and sustainability of New Orleans because the next generation of citizens needs to understand the issues our city has and how to solve them. Soon enough, we will be the ones making decisions that influence our city. I am planning to go to college in a part of the country that isn't the south to give myself a broader perspective. I think that this program in particular will be very useful because I feel that most of my peers and I don't understand how the different aspects of the place we live function to the extent that we need to in order to positively affect the city. I want to be able to make a difference in New Orleans, and education is essential in my ability to do that.
