Tuesday, September 2nd, 2014. Today is the first day that I have begun the New Orleans Scholars Program, and I am anticipating great things to come. Today my fellow scholars and I took a walk in the French Quarter, and using an app made by the New Orleans Historical Society, we compared the architecture and culture of New Orleans past to the present day, resulting in a blending of the past and present. We viewed the old fire station, the Astor Hotel, and a Holiday Inn, to name a few; each building was imbued with a history that under-lied the facade of the building, making for a story to go along with the older pictures of the region. Seeing these pictures of past architecture made me realize the emphasis and importance of maintaining the culture and history of the Quarter. My guides through the French Quarter were two of the local historians at the Historical Society, and through their lens that they introduced to me, I saw a new picture of New Orleans that I had not seen before. This experience was quite enlightening, and I hope for more to come.
