How does the study of a city's history affect decisions that move a city toward a sustainable future?
Over the course of this semester, we focused on New Orleans' history and its preservation. New Orleans is a jambalaya of cultures, religions, heritages, and architecture. It is this diversity that makes New Orleans unique. And while we want to embrace new technologies and ideas, we do not want to lose our distinctive foundation. Thus, before we can move forward, we need to study our past and, as much as possible, incorporate our past into the future. It is a fine balance between seizing the new and retaining the old. While we want to improve our city, we simultaneously must preserve the important cultural aspects from the past that are an integral part of our unique culture.
